Why isn’t my dishwasher getting my dishes clean?

Wed Mar 25 2026

Dishwashers are supposed to make life easier — especially after cooking big family meals or hosting friends. But when you open the door and find stuck-on food, cloudy glasses, or dishes that don’t look or feel clean, it can be frustrating.

If you’ve been asking, “Why doesn’t my dishwasher get my dishes clean?”, you’re not alone. At Pacific Appliance, we help Hawaii homeowners troubleshoot these issues every day, and most problems come down to a few common culprits.

Here’s what might be going on — and how to fix it.

    Your Spray Arms Are Clogged

The spray arms are what actually wash your dishes. If the holes are blocked by food, minerals, or debris, the water can’t reach everything.

    How to Fix It:

    • Remove the spray arms (usually twist-off or clip-on)

    • Rinse under warm water

    • Use a toothpick or small brush to clear each spray hole

    • Reinstall securely

Hawaii Tip: Mineral buildup from hard water is common on the islands — monthly cleaning helps prevent blockages.

    Your Filter Is Dirty

Many modern dishwashers have a removable filter at the bottom. When it gets clogged with food or grease, water can’t circulate properly.

    How to Fix It:

    • Remove the bottom rack

    • Twist out the filter

    • Wash with warm, soapy water

    • Replace securely

A clean filter is the biggest difference between a dishwasher that works and one that doesn’t.

    You’re Overloading the Dishwasher

We all want to fit as much as possible into one load, but stacking dishes too tightly prevents water from reaching every surface.

    Fix It By:

    • Leaving space between plates

    • Avoiding overlapping items

    • Making sure tall items don’t block the spray arm

A properly loaded dishwasher cleans much more effectively.

    Your Water Isn’t Hot Enough

Dishwashers need water at 120°F–140°F to break down grease and sanitize dishes. If your water heater is set too low, the dishwasher can't do its job.

    Quick Test:

Start the kitchen sink with hot water. If it doesn’t heat up quickly, your dishwasher is also starting with cool water.

    Fix It:

    • Turn up your water heater

    • Run the sink until water is hot before starting a load

    Hard Water Is Leaving Residue

In Hawaii, hard water is common — especially in older homes. Minerals like calcium and magnesium can leave chalky buildup on glasses and dishes.

    How to Fix It:

    • Use a dishwasher cleaner monthly

    • Try a rinse aid — it makes a big difference

    • Consider a dishwasher with built-in water softening features

Brands like KitchenAid, Café, and Bosch have excellent hard-water performance.

    Your Detergent Isn’t Working Well

Not all dishwasher detergents are created equal. Cheap detergents often leave behind a residue or don’t break down food effectively.

    Try:

    ✔️ A premium detergent pod
    ✔️ Adding rinse aid
✔️ Avoiding old or clumped detergent (humidity affects it in Hawaii)

Something Is Blocking the Soap Dispenser

If a big pan or cutting board is placed in front of the dispenser, your soap might not release properly.

    Fix It:

Make sure large items are on the sides or top rack — never in front of the dispenser.

Your Dishwasher Needs a Deep Clean

Like any appliance, dishwashers need maintenance to run well — especially in Hawaii’s humid climate, which encourages mold and buildup.

    Once a Month:

    • Clean the filter

    • Wipe the door seals

    • Run a dishwasher cleaner

    • Clean spray arms

Small maintenance tasks make a big difference.

The Dishwasher Itself Is Wearing Out

If your dishwasher is older, you might be noticing:

    • Poor cleaning

    • Long cycles

    • Loud operation

    • Leaks

    • Bad odors

At that point, it may be more cost-effective to replace rather than repair — especially with energy-efficient models now available.
